Toby was born with a condition called DiGeorge syndrome, a condition that can cause a range of health problems, including heart defects.
As a result, he had to be transferred to Alder Hey when he was just a day old for heart surgery.
The surgery was a success, but he would need to return to the hospital when he was two years old for another open-heart operation, due to a condition named aortic stenosis, which is where the aortic valve in the heart is narrowed, restricting blood flow.
Once again, Toby recovered but has been in and out of Alder Hey since then to continue his care.
Last month, Toby started struggling with his heart again and needed surgery to repair his aortic valve. The surgery was a success, with a range of staff working through the night to collectively save his life.
Now, Toby is back at home and recovering just in time for Halloween, his favourite time of year.
According to mum Nicole, he’s even been singing and dancing to the hocus pocus soundtrack since he got home.
“I am thankful for the surgeons and cardiologists, but in particular for the nurses and medics on PICU who took care of him for three weeks recently and who collectively saved his life with their expertise. There are some fantastically gifted and committed doctors and nurses who work there in a very high-risk, high pace environment and every one of them should be commended.”
