The Department of Anaesthesia at Alder Hey looks to provide safe and compassionate care for infants, children and young people who require anaesthesia, sedation, or pain relief. Usually, this is because our patients are undergoing surgical operations -anything from brain surgery to foot surgery and everything in between- but it also includes providing anaesthesia for some non-surgical procedures such as complex scans.
The Jackson Rees Department of Anaesthesia
We run pre-operative assessment clinics to help prepare children for surgery, and we work closely with specialist nurses to provide an around-the-clock Acute Pain Service. Anaesthetists are also heavily involved with the trauma service at Alder Hey and with the Chronic Pain Clinic. So, from grommets to open heart surgery, we are here to help with more than 20,000 anaesthetics each year. And the name? We are proud to bear the name of Dr Gordon Jackson Rees– a pioneering specialist paediatric anaesthetist in Liverpool who did so much to improve anaesthesia for children all over the world over. We look to continue his work in our care.

Our pain service cares for patients with pain related to injuries, operations, tests, procedures and medical conditions.
It is important for children to be able to tell us when they are in pain and how much pain they are in, and we have worked hard to give all of our patients an effective way to communicate this to us.
