During December 2023, our Emergency Department was ranked second nationally regarding waiting times, seeing and treating 85% of our Children and Young people within four hours of their arrival.
The national NHS target stands at 76%, with our Emergency Department ranked first in the North-West region.
Key changes that helped facilitate this performance over the winter included increasing streaming from the department to our Urgent Treatment Centre and launching our Paediatric Admissions Unit (PAU) pilot.
The Paediatric Admissions Unit is a short-stay facility which focuses on direct referrals from GPs, midwives and health visitors, helping to reduce admissions to our Emergency Department.
“Well done to the Emergency Department team for their performance in December. We saw 6,328 children and young people come through the door and 85% of those were seen and discharged within 4 hours. I would like to personally thank all the Emergency Department staff for their continued hard work throughout the year. The department can be a challenging place to work, and the staff are always willing to try new ways of working to improve our patient journey. I am proud to work with such an amazing team.”
Tracey Wileman, A&E Team Leader
Well done to our Emergency Department staff for this achievement, as well as all other teams who have supported them to achieve this during the winter months, including General Paediatrics and both medical and surgical specialities.
