Melanie Hamilton, a specialty trainee doctor here at Alder Hey, was cycling home from a night shift when she noticed a group of people standing around a man who had collapsed.
That man was Grant Williams, a fitness instructor who was training for the Manchester half marathon when his heart stopped.
He was unconscious and fighting for his life. Melanie approached and, after noticing he wasn’t breathing, started CPR chest compressions.
She was then helped by a doctor from Arrowe Park Hospital who was nearby. Thanks to the chest compressions, Grant came back around, but then fell into a second cardiac arrest.
After using a defibrillator from a local Tesco, Grant was shocked out of his cardiac arrest and this time fully came around. He was taken by ambulance to Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, where he underwent a quadruple bypass operation lasting five and half hours.
Thankfully, Grant made a full recovery, but never got to say thank you to his rescuers. So, after he made an appearance on BBC Breakfast appealing for his lifesavers to come forward, Melanie did just that and met Grant at a recent reunion of all the people responsible for saving his life.
Let’s take a moment to applaud Melanie and everyone involved. What a remarkable story! Well done Melanie!
