Alder Hey Christmas Light Switch On

28th Nov 2019

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital kicked off our festive season with an extra special lights switch on by 2019 Pride of Britain winner Dante Marvin.

Dante is 11 years old and from Liverpool and will switch on the Christmas lights to officially mark the start of Christmas at Alder Hey with his consultant surgeon Mr Leroy James, who has cared and treated Dante since he was a baby.

Dante was born with brittle bone disease and scoliosis and has fractured or broken 92 bones in his life so far. He had 16 broken bones when he was still in his mum Rachael’s womb. He won the Child of Courage award at this year’s Pride of Britain awards for his incredible attitude and his campaigning for other disabled children

Brittle bone disease is a disorder that results in fragile bones that break easily. It’s typically present at birth and can affect one person in 20,000.

To get everyone into the festive spirit, the event included a visit from Santa on his sleigh, performances from Resonate Brass Band, St Paul & St Timothy’s Catholic Infant School Choir and performance by the Alder Hey Staff Makaton Choir.

Chief Executive Louise Shepherd said:

“This is such an exciting and fantastic way to start Christmas at Alder Hey. It’s so important that we are able to celebrate Christmas across the hospital as some of our patients and families will be spending Christmas here. Many of our staff will also be working over the festive season.

“I would like to thank Dante his mum Rachael and Leroy for coming down and officially switching our lights on and our fab Young person’s Forum for hosting the event and launching Christmas here. I would also like to thank everyone who has contributed to making our hospital look so wonderful and festive including Interserve who have paid for the tree and helped with installations.”

Alder Hey would like to thank everyone who has come together to help with the Christmas lights switch on and those who gave their time and help including Interserve who have paid for the tree and helped install it, Décor Events for the Christmas Tree and atrium decorations, Dante and his mum Rachael and his consultant Leroy James for switching the lights on. Also massive thanks to Tom, Molly and Josie from the Young Person’s Forum who hosted the event, Resonate Brass Band from Notre Dame Catholic College, St Paul & St Timothy’s Catholic Infant School Choir and the Alder Hey Staff Makaton Choir for performing.
