A Grand visit from National jockeys at Alder Hey

5th Apr 2019

On Friday 5th April 2019, a number of Grand National jockeys visited Alder Hey hospital, continuing a tradition that's lasted more than 30 years!

The jockeys traditionally visit on the Friday morning before the Grand National and spend time with patients, families and staff.

The group were led this year by Grand National-winning jockeys and Alder Hey Charity patrons Sir AP McCoy and Mick Fitzgerald, as the group shared their stories, had some laughs and even gave out some tips!

Alder Hey Charity were also given the esteemed honour of being named the official 41st runner of the Grand National. We sent Alder Hey patient and Charity Ambassador Daniel Bell to represent us, who was also named as the offical jockey on the card!

As if the day couldn't get any better here at Alder Hey, we also had a very special visit from none other than 2012 Grand National winner Neptune Collonges and his owners.

Our patients, families and staff really enjoyed getting up close and personal with a real-life Grand National horse and some even fed him his favourite treat - polo mints!

The Grand National jockey visit is one that is very dear to us here at Alder Hey and it's truly wonderful to see the smiles that are put on everyone's faces as a result of the jockeys taking the time out of their busy schedules to come here and brighten everyone's day.

We're already looking forward to next year's visit!
