The Institute in the Park, also know as the Speakman Building, is our dedicated research, innovation and education centre located next door to our Hospital.
Within this Centre, academic researchers, healthcare professionals, technology companies, commercial research teams, students and educators are able to collaborate freely in one shared space.
Research and education teams from our four University partners (University of Liverpool, Edge Hill University, Liverpool John Moores University and University of Central Lancashire) are based within the building. We are working with them to share, learn and improve the care and understanding of children and their health needs.
he Institute hosts part of the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN). The NIHR CRN is responsible for all children’s research across the country and hosts national centres of excellence in research including childhood infections, respiratory disorders, cancer, neurodisability , international health, musculoskeletal diseases and the UKs only Experimental Arthritis Treatment Centre for Children.
Collaboration within our Institute also supports clinical studies taking place within our outstanding NIHR Clinical Research Facility within our main hospital. The co-location of our Institute and NIHR CRF within one of Europe’s busiest children’s hospitals means even more children, young people and healthcare professionals have an opportunity to take part in clinical trials. Here at Alder Hey we believe that every child should be offered the chance to take part in research. In 2021/22, over 13,000 babies, children and young people were enrolled into clinical research studies at Alder Hey, making it the highest NHS recruiter overall in the North West.
The Institute also provides the perfect location for our teaching and training sessions, enabling us to improve the skills and knowledge of healthcare professionals. It is home to our Alder Hey Academy and education teams who offer training, education and continuing professional development to our staff, along with the next generation of health specialists.
Funding for the Institute included donations and pledges from: the European Regional Development Fund, Liverpool City Council, Alder Hey Children’s Charity, Matalan, the Wolfson Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust, the North West Coast Academic Health Science Network, Alumni and local supporters.
