Mumbai doctor expands her skills at Alder Hey
Doctor in cardiology Manveen Bhussar has been expanding her skills with the Alder Hey heart team who she met through their international work with Healing Little Hearts Charity.
She has been mentored by senior cardiac surgeon Dr Ram Dhannapuneni, who was leading the team when they met in Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai in 2014.
Healing Little Hearts is a children’s charity, which funds visits by medical staff to perform cardiac surgery on children in remote areas of Africa and India who otherwise wouldn’t have access to treatment.
Thousands of children are born with heart defects each year, but children in India and Africa do not have access to a public health system like the NHS.
Dr Dhannapuneni is the lead cardiac surgeon for the Healing Little Hearts charity, which has conducted 19 camps each lasting for a week at the Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai where Dr Bhussar was completing her training residency in paediatrics.

The team performed more than 200 operations, with surgeries sometimes lasting up to 10 hours. Dr Bhussar said: “It was a great learning experience and gave me the exposure to the management of young patients after cardiac surgery.
“In India, there are limited training opportunities for paediatric cardiology.”
Dr Bhussar kept in touch with the charity and was encouraged to apply for a position as a clinical fellow in cardiology and the intensive care unit at Alder Hey last year.
Since joining the hospital she has been actively involved in clinical work with the cardiology team and is working as a cardiology registrar taking care of inpatients and outpatients. She has also been responsible for the care of post op patients in the intensive care unit and cardiac referrals from different departments and other hospitals in the North West region.
She said: “I have had an amazing time working in Alder Hey and have learned so much including echocardiography skills and also how to manage the complicated cardiac patients. “Alder Hey cardiology and cardiac surgery department is a high volume centre and I have had exposure to the whole spectrum of congenital and acquired heart diseases in children.
“It is an amazing department to work in and I have had good support from all the consultants and colleagues.”
Dr Bhussar plans to return to Mumbai later this year to work in a paediatric cardiac centre where she will use her skills to train colleagues and nursing staff.
