The BMA has announced that junior doctors will be taking part in industrial action at a number of hospitals, including Alder Hey, from Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th March 2023.
We understand this may cause our patients and families to worry about how services will be delivered during this period. It is important to know that if you require urgent or emergency treatment you should attend Alder Hey or other NHS services. To help you make the right choices, please use our Symptom Checker.
In order to prioritise emergency care and to keep all patients safe, we are having to make changes to some of our outpatient and theatre services on the days of industrial action. However, the majority of appointments in clinic will be maintained and some planned procedures will still proceed.
If you have an appointment for a clinic or operation between Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th March and you have not received any communication from Alder Hey about your appointment, please attend as normal. Your clinic appointment or procedure will still go ahead.
If it is necessary to rearrange or postpone an appointment or procedure on those days, you will receive communication from Alder Hey before your appointment. We are aiming to contact all patients by Saturday 11th March.
Emergency Department
Alder Hey’s Emergency Department will be open as usual. If it is not an emergency, please consider other options such as checking our Symptom Checker, visiting a pharmacist, contacting your GP, or visiting www.111.nhs.uk.
Outside the hospital
During the days when industrial action is due to take place, the outside of the hospital may look a bit different. However, the main entrances will still be in use and will be fully accessible.
We completely respect the right of staff to take part in lawful industrial action. While pay is a matter for Government and the trade unions, our staff are valued and respected by the organisation, and we understand the importance of good pay and conditions for individuals and their families.
We want to thank all patients and families for their patience and support during this period.
