Founders and Directors
Our founders and directors provide strategic leadership and represent the Innovation Service in the hospital and beyond.
David Powell, Executive Lead for Innovation (Development Director)
David joined Alder Hey as Development Director in December 2012 and has over 30 years experience working in the NHS. Prior to his role at Alder Hey, David held Development Director posts in Bristol and London overseeing new hospital programmes.
David has a history degree from Manchester University and is a qualified accountant.
Mr Iain Hennessey, Clinical Director of Innovation (Consultant Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeon)
Mr Iain Hennessey leads an Innovation Service which is working with world leading companies and local small businesses, using gaming technology, sensors and cognitive computing to predict the progression of illnesses and plan individualised treatments.
Iain says: “Our aim is to be the world’s best hospital for children, using all the latest technology to take the fear out of coming in for an operation or appointment and also to provide the best possible care.
“I love my role as director of innovation – it allows me to work with companies who are at the leading edge of technology; to try out new kit such as virtual reality headsets, or visit a super computer and see how it crunches data to produce the best care plan for a patient."
Mr Rafael Guerrero, Co-Director of Innovation (Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeon, Chief of Congenital Cardiac Surgery)
Mr Guerrero has been a Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeon at Alder Hey since 2012 and prior to this had been a Consultant at the Leeds Children’s Hospital from 2006.
Rafael is one of three cardiac surgeons at Alder Hey, one of the largest children heart units in the United Kingdom. As part of his role in the Innovation Service, Rafael has worked with the University of Liverpool's Virtual Engineering Centre to develop a pre-operative planning tool which uses the latest developments in virtual reality.
Outside work, Rafael is a keen rower, competing at national and international regattas, as well as enjoying road cycling and outdoor sports.
