The National Health Service is turning 70 on 5 July 2018. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions, to appreciate the vital role the service plays in our lives, and to recognise and thank the extraordinary NHS staff – the everyday heroes – who are there to guide, support and care for us, day in, day out.
The NHS is turning 70 this year and what better way to celebrate one of the nation’s most loved institutions than with a cup of tea.
But this will be more than just a regular brew. On and around 5 July, people up and down the country will get together to raise a cuppa to our beloved NHS and raise funds for NHS charities.
Over the last 70 years the NHS has transformed the health and wellbeing of the nation and become the envy of the world. And helping behind the scenes are more than 250 dedicated NHS charities.
Whether supporting research and development, brightening up hospital environments, providing state-of-the-art technologies and equipment or supporting staff, they help the NHS to go above and beyond.
The NHS has touched us all and NHS Big 7Tea is a chance to celebrate and say thank you.
Across the UK people are organising tea parties and many are choosing an NHS charity to support.
You might want to invite your friends to a street party, brew up for your family, crack open the staff room tea bags, or commandeer the local village hall. You could raise money for the NHS charity helping your local hospital, or another one that is close to your heart.
However you choose to celebrate and whichever NHS charity you want to support our pack will provide you with everything you need to host the perfect party.

Our NHS70 celebrations aim to recognise the contribution that NHS staff make to patient care. As a thank you to all extraordinary NHS staff – the everyday heroes who are always there to care for us – there are over 400 tickets to give away to some amazing sporting events.
From Wimbledon to Wembley, Elland Road to Edgbaston and Carnoustie to Old Trafford, there’s something for all sports fans, including some very special prizes:
To take part, you need to be an NHS staff employed by an NHS organisation and aged over 18. You’ll need to submit a few details including your name, job title and organisation, NHS email address and NHS payroll number/staff number/assignment number. This can be found on the payslip of NHS staff, or by contacting your local NHS HR department.
On Saturday 9 June, the NHS and parkrun UK will jointly host parkrun for the NHS to mark the NHS’s 70th birthday. Launched by double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes, over 1300 local parkruns will be hosting special events to celebrate the contribution of the NHS to the nation, whilst encouraging people to get active.
parkruns are free, 5k events that take place in hundreds of locations across the UK every Saturday morning. They are coordinated entirely by volunteers and are open to walkers and runners of all ages and abilities. Why not get involved in parkrun for the NHS? You can run, jog, walk or volunteer. Children and young people make up a fifth of the UK’s population. Improving their health, wellbeing and understanding of the NHS is a priority not only for their future, but the future of the NHS.
As part of the celebrations for the 70th birthday of the NHS, new opportunities are being developed to work more closely with schools and youth organisations. The views and involvement of young people are critical in shaping an NHS fit for future generations.
