Copy-of-Copy-of-P1060527.jpegAlder Hey runs an epilepsy nurse specialist service, providing advice and support is provided for children and their families who have epilepsy.

Children referred to the service will be seen in a new patients clinic to provide education and information about epilepsy. Lifestyle issues are discussed, questions answered and safety advice given.

Alder Hey also hosts, jointly with Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, a specialist epilepsy surgery service, which has been proven to be a successful way to treat epilepsy.

Information for professionals: Referrals

The nurses work alongside the Neurologists, general paediatricians and community paediatricians. Epilepsy advice and support is also provided for health professionals.

Referral criteria

  • The child must have a definite diagnosis of epilepsy which has been discussed with the family
  • The epilepsy must be managed by a consultant based at Alder Hey
  • A referral must be made by an Alder Hey consultant, either by Meditech or a dictated letter
