This section explains about our facilities and amenities at Alder Hey which will make things a little easier for families when visiting. Staff and volunteers are also on hand to help out and our concierge team in the Atrium can help with any questions.
There are 66 disabled parking spaces across the seven floors of our multi-storey car park, which can be accessed from East Prescot Road (L14 5AB on a sat-nav).
If you are visiting in a large wheelchair accessible vehicle, please park in the Emergency Department car park to avoid issues accessing the multi-storey car park.
For frequent visitors – you can buy a discounted pass at conciege (look out for the 'Car Park Help Desk' sign in the main hospital atrium). You can purchase passes for ten consecutive days for £10.00, or 30 consecutive days for £30.00, plus a £5.00 cash deposit, which is refunded once the pass has been returned.
There are two Changing Places toilets: one in the hospital atrium and one on the first floor and toilet facilities on every ward.
Support is available for patients and families who have language and communication needs. We will usually be told of the need for this service at the time of referral from your GP or healthcare practitioner.
Language interpreter & translation services are available for face to face interpreting and telephone interpretation. There is also a service for British Sign Language interpretation.

Toilets and baby changing rooms are located in the Atrium and there are toilets on wards. The majority of our patient bedrooms have ensuite facilities.
We have breastfeeding facilities in the Atrium and on each floor.
All reception desks in the hospital have a hearing loop.
There are disabled car parking spaces available on every floor of the multi-storey car park, and space for large wheelchair accessible vehicles in our Emergency Department short-stay car park.
We have accessible disabled toilets throughout the hospital and Changing Places toilets on the:
Ground floor - located with the main toilet facilities in the atrium, next to the public seating area of the Treetops restaurant.
First floor - located in Outpatients (accessed by lift or stairs behind Costa Coffee); turn left at the top of the stairs/as you come out of the lift. The Changing Places facility can be found along the long corridor, just beyond the Outpatients waiting area.
PALS is a confidential service to support our patient and their families when concerns or complaints cannot be addressed by ward or clinic staff. You can contact the team on 0151 252 5374 or find other ways to contact PALS by clicking here.
Our Treetops restaurant in the hospital Atrium serves teas and coffees, hot and cold breakfasts, lunches and dinners from 8am each day (8.30am at weekends) and a range of fresh snacks, salads and sandwiches throughout the day. There are vending machines available 24 hours a day.
There is a vegetarian food option every day that may provide a suitable alternative for some families. In addition, Halal and Kosher food options are available (frozen Hermolis preferably requested in advance). Disposable cutlery is available for all visitors in the restaurant and disposable crockery can be requested. A variety of food options are also available on inpatient wards where our patients’ dietary needs and menu options can be discussed with the dedicated ward chef.
The Atrium also has a Baguette Co, Costa Coffee and WH Smith.
Patient bedrooms have been equipped with special parent beds, funded by Alder Hey Children’s Charity, so one parent or carer can stay overnight. Check visiting hours for friends and families here.
Each ward has an area near the patient bedrooms for parents to make hot and cold drinks and chat with other parents.
Our Outpatient Department Garden, funded by the Steven Gerrard Foundation, is accessed from the Atrium and is great for young people to explore and get some fresh air before or after an appointment. There are also quiet areas to sit and watch a special TV screen.
For inpatients, every ward has a covered, open-air play deck allowing access to fresh air and park views.
The pharmacy is in the corner of the Atrium, near the East Prescot Road entrance.
A free-to-use cash machine is available in the Atrium. If the machine is unavailable, there are machines at the Sainsbury’s supermarket across East Prescot Road.
In the atrium near the car park entrance, our Cash Office can help with queries about travel expenses.
Free wifi is available to our patients and visitors.
The Hospital School at Alder Hey teaches inpatients of statutory school age and aims to provide a positive and enjoyable learning experience for all pupils within the National Curriculum framework. Children who are well enough may have lessons on their ward from hospital teachers. Teachers may also contact the schools of children who are in hospital for longer stays to find out what work they are missing.

As well as having dedicated play specialists to entertain and distract our young patients, there are regular visits from artists, storytellers, musicians and magicians to entertain our children, encourage their creative sides and boost their recovery. Our community partners run a variety of workshops including Football Spa sessions and animation creation. You’ll find some brilliant animation work on our Youtube channel. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without the vital funds raised by our Charity.

We think it’s important to encourage healthy eating and exercise and we do this in a fun, engaging way. You can even run for charity, to raise funds for the hospital. Our Smile Clinic teaches children how to brush their teeth properly and we provide ‘stop smoking’ support for families and staff.
We think it’s vital that our families have access to fresh fruit and vegetables during their treatment here. The Barrow, a joint venture between Alder Hey and the Liverpool Taste for Health Scheme, sells produce at competitive prices and visits every day from 10am to 2pm.
You can find the fruit and veg barrow next to the Emergency Department entrance to the Atrium.
Our Spiritual Care Team is available 24 hours a day to support, reassure and assist families of any faith. The multi-faith spiritual care centre is located in the treehouse area, accessed from the second floor.
The sanctuary has religious symbols and information representing different faith groups to ensure that it is a welcoming area for all faiths to pray.
For those of the Jewish faith, some Siddurim and Kippot are available.
For those of the Muslim faith, a purpose-built ablution facility can be found in the Sanctuary. The Qibla direction is marked and copies of the Quran and prayer mats are available. On Fridays, some members of the Muslim faith gather together for prayers at approximately 1pm.
For those of the Sikh faith, the Sacred Nitnem and the Holy Sukhmani Sahib Gutkas are available.
