National Practical Course in Paediatric Otolaryngology

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital has six paediatric ENT consultants, one locum paediatric ENT consultant, two clinical fellows (one senior and one junior), three specialist registrars, and one foundation doctor.

ENT patients are managed on Ward 3A which provides care at the level of a high dependency unit for these complicated patients. The ward is managed by a ward sister and her team of highly experienced staff nurses.

The department has a dedicated tracheostomy nurse specialist who provides advice and support to tracheostomised children and their families, as well as two other ENT nurse specialists. The department has an outpatient clinic and theatre session every working day.

The ENT department has expertise in paediatric airway endoscopy and laryngeal reconstruction, complicated ear reconstruction and osseo-integrated techniques (bone-anchored hearing aids and prostheses for congenital ear atresia), auditory implantation, paediatric head and neck pathology, sialendoscopy, correction of choanal atresia and other congenital abnormalities.

Most of the children managed in the ENT department have complicated ENT problems, in addition to various other medical and surgical problems.

A wide variety of surgeries are performed in the ENT department ranging from grommet insertion to complex airway reconstructions.

The ENT department has expertise in;

  • paediatric airway endoscopy and laryngeal reconstruction
  • complicated ear reconstruction and osseo-integrated techniques (bone-anchored hearing aids and prostheses for congenital ear atresia)
  • auditory implantation
  • paediatric head and neck pathology
  • sialendoscopy
  • correction of choanal atresia and other congenital abnormalities.

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is serviced by a single ward and runs a number of clinics.

Ward

Our ENT patients are cared for on Ward 3A. 

Clinics

The ENT department runs general ENT outpatient clinics and other specialist clinics.

Each consultant has general outpatient clinics every week and is also involved in other clinics.

The other clinics are run as multi-disciplinary combined clinics with other specialists. These clinics are;

  • microtia clinic
  • voice clinic
  • craniofacial clinic
  • cleft lip and palate clinic
  • auditory implant clinics
  • allergy clinic
  • clinic for Down’s patients
  • drooling clinic
  • complex airway clinic
