The Heart Centre at Alder Hey

The Heart Centre at Alder Hey is commissioned to provide Level 1 service for paediatric patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). We provide highly specialised care including diagnostics, catheter interventions and surgeries in children and young people. The Heart Centre is the regional referral centre for the North West of England (including Liverpool, Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria), North and Mid Wales and the Isle of Man with a catchment area of about 11 million people.

Our clinicians carry out approximately 450 major heart operations and 400 key-hole interventions per year. In addition we see approximately 20,000 outpatients per year at Alder Hey and our network clinics closer to the patient's home.

The Heart Centre also forms partnership with closely situated Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, for early detection and prenatal monitoring of CHD, as well as ensuring seamless transition of care when patients reach adulthood.  This allows us to deliver high quality service in a single pathway for patients of all ages with a Heart defects.
