Management of the collection, validation and submission of National Congenital Heart Disease Audit (NCHDA) data is overseen by the Cardiac & Clinical Information Data Manager.
Data is routinely reviewed and presented internally at monthly Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement meetings to forecast activity, evaluate PRAiS curves, monitor trends and patient outcomes.
Data is also accumulated and submitted quarterly to Specialised Services Quality Dashboards (SSDQ) designed to provide assurance on quality of care. SSDQs are a key tool in monitoring the quality of the service, enabling comparison between service providers and supporting improvements over time in the outcomes commissioned by NHS England.
The Cardiac Audit Team provide quality information regularly assisting in audit and research projects.
The National Congenital Heart Disease Audit
The National Congenital Heart Disease Audit (NCHDA) collects data from all centres undertaking paediatric and congenital cardiac surgery and interventional procedures, including electrophysiology, in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (RoI). The audit focuses on monitoring activity levels and outcomes following cardiovascular procedures, as well as the success of antenatal diagnostic screening.
The audit aims to improve the quality of specialist congenital cardiovascular care by providing reliable, risk adjusted and independently validated data (for larger centres), including
Co-ordinating Professional Society;
British Congenital Cardiac Association (BCCA)
Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS)
National Cardiac Audit Programme (NCAP) 2019 Annual Report -
The newly-integrated National Cardiac Audit Programme (NCAP) covers cardiovascular medical and surgical specialties, bringing together six major national clinical audits of patients treated in the UK for heart disease. The NCAP outputs are delivered by the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR).

How the NCHDA gathers and uses data
Clinical information about cardiovascular patients is collected by hospitals across the UK and stored in NICOR's secure databases. Their audits and registries were set up with clinical input and backing from specialist cardiovascular societies. The professional societies continue to provide clinical leadership to ensure that the audits and analyses are clinically relevant.
NICOR provide information to the Department of Health, the Care Quality Commission and other regulatory bodies to enable them to check that standards of care meet national guidelines for good practice, and compare outcomes such as casemix-adjusted survival rates between hospitals.
NICOR encourage the use of the data for research, and invite applications from external research groups to use their data. Several current and proposed research projects link information from different data sources about individual patients' disease and treatments. This enables a patient's care to be tracked across primary and secondary care, and across multiple visits to hospital, to build up a detailed picture of the treatment of cardiovascular disease in the UK.
NICOR has experience of linking data to other national datasets such as the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) and Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES), which provides a unique opportunity for research into cardiovascular epidemiology and long term outcomes.
We are immensely proud that the Trust achieved a 98.5% NICOR data score for 18/19.
