The anaesthetic department at Alder Hey is named in honour of Dr Jackson Rees, a pioneer of anaesthesia and intensive care of children undergoing heart surgery.
Alder Hey has, for many years, been one of the largest centres in the country for training specialist children’s (and children’s cardiac) anaesthetists and consultants at Alder Hey have contributed to knowledge and education of anaesthetists through lectures and writing both in the UK and internationally.
Philip has been a consultant cardiac anaesthetist at Alder Hey since 2001. He specialises in providing anaesthesia for children undergoing heart surgery and interventional cardiology procedures (in the catheter laboratory).
He has played a key role in developing approaches aimed at helping children to recover (and leave hospital) quicker after surgery. He has other interests in care of newborns undergoing surgery, intra-operative echocardiography and diagnostics (providing information to help guide surgeons during surgery) and management of bleeding. He is also interested in electronic decision support during anaesthesia.
He has written several book chapters, given lectures and performed original research on these subjects. He is the research lead and lead for cardiac anaesthesia at Alder Hey and a member of the scientific committee of the APA (Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists).
He has had national and international leadership roles in anaesthetic care of children. He has also travels widely to assist with care of children with congenital heart disease and in the last few years has assisted with providing peri-operative care to children in India, China, Trinidad and Mauritius.
