There are different surgical techniques available to perform SDR. Alder Hey provides the modified TS Park technique which is less invasive for the child undergoing surgery and reduces the risk of skeletal deformities in the long term.
How does SDR surgery help?
SDR surgery is a high risk and irreversible procedure which works by tackling the cause rather than the effects of spasticity. SDR surgery is not a cure for cerebral palsy but it reduces muscle spasticity permanently.
The brain informs the spinal cord how much tone or tightness each muscle should have. Muscles also send information along sensory nerve fibres back to the spinal cord to further control the tone In cerebral palsy this communication route from the brain to the spinal cord, and from the muscles to the spinal cord, do not function effectively. It is this loss of communication which contributes to spasticity.
The procedure works by identifying the overactive sensory nerve roots using electrical stimulation The nerve roots that generate unusual electrical activity are thought to be those which contribute to too much spasticity. The nerves, which carry the correct message, will remain intact
