When Jess was just five months old, she was diagnosed with scoliosis, a curvature of the spine that can cause serious issues if left untreated.
From the age of one, Jess wore a permanent spinal plaster cast and had to have general anaesthetic every 12 weeks. She then moved to a Boston Brace, which she had to wear for 23 hours a day.
At four years old, Jess underwent major spinal surgery at Alder Hey, performed by Mr Davidson, to have magnetic rods placed in her spine. The rods were extended every three or four months to help straighten her spine.
Although Jess struggles to do things other children can do easily, she is much happier and healthier than before.
We are so grateful that this treatment has been suitable and available. We are proud, privileged, and thankful to have an amazing NHS and the best surgeon in Mr Davidson, who is a lovely man and has been fantastic with Jess.”
Jess’s mum Sarah
She just gets on with things. She’s been through so much and we are so proud of her character and resilience. As she now says herself, scoliosis is just one little part of her. She is such a happy, kind, sweet natured child and we are truly blessed.”
