What operations typically require anaesthetics?
Most surgical procedures at Alder Hey will require a general anaesthetic. Sometimes the operation will require a local anaesthetic, but this is rare.
When will I be told I need anaesthetics?
Patients will be told they need anaesthetics when they are listed to have an operation by a surgeon.
What happens when I am about to have anaesthetics?
Prior to the surgery, you will be contacted by the pre-operative team who will undertake a phone or face-to-face consultation to ensure your child is fit for surgery.
On the day of the surgery, you may be asked to come in and see an anaesthetist to help go through the day surgery and take X-rays and bloods if needed.
After the surgery, you will be moved to your respective ward and will be able to ask any follow up questions you have.
Do I always need to come in for a pre-operative?
No, not always. Sometimes the pre-operative consultation will happen over the phone and you will then only need to come in for the day of your operation.
